Why this conversation
Teams that provision Kubernetes clusters declaratively often do it with Cluster API, and for Talos Linux that path depends on two providers their vendor has marked deprecated. At TalosCon in Amsterdam, the host spoke with Pepijn Oomen, a platform engineer at Redpill Linpro, who wants to change that. It is a very short conversation, under two minutes: a call to action more than an interview.
Two providers, marked deprecated
What Pepijn wanted to talk about is the Cluster API support for Talos Linux: the control plane provider and the bootstrap provider. Sidero Labs, the company behind Talos, has updated their README to say that they are deprecated. His view is that the community should act to keep Cluster API support current, up to the latest version of the specs, v1beta2.
He is trying to take a lead role in bringing the community together for further development of both providers. Anyone interested can reach out to him; the way to get in touch is his LinkedIn profile.
Where Cluster API fits
For those who do not know it, Cluster API is one way to provision Talos on the infrastructure of your choice. There are others: Terraform, and Sidero Labs’ own Omni, which, as he put it, “we need to mention”. For people who want an alternative, Cluster API is one of them.
