Safe Software: hard-to-reach data for agents

Matt Meeboer of Safe Software on FME Flow's no-code MCP servers, which give agents hard-to-reach data such as 3D building models and live sensor feeds.

Matt Meeboer works at Safe Software, the company behind FME. Luca Berton talked to him at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America 2026 in San Jose on 23 October 2026, near registration, after the expo floor had closed for the year.

Thirty years, starting with geospatial

Safe Software has been around for more than 30 years. It started in a niche, GIS, geospatial data, and has grown “to support and integrate with almost anything”. The name goes back to the 1990s, to a geospatial file format called SAFE.

What brought the company to AGNTCon was mostly MCP. Safe Software integrates with agents in a few ways, and the point of all of them is the hard-to-reach data, the kind in a 3D model of the building they were standing in. How do you get that into the hands of agents? FME already has the connectors and the capabilities to validate such data, transform it and put it into a structured format an agent can understand.

No-code MCP servers

In the 26.2 release, which came out earlier this year, FME Flow can create one or more MCP servers whose MCP tools are built without code on the platform. Luca asked whether this relates to embodied AI. Matt did not know the term; for Safe Software, he said, it is about building the tools for customers who work with all kinds of datasets, not only spatial ones, so that they can give that data to agents.

FME’s no-code pipelines are transportable, in a file format that can be published to its web server and used as the code behind an MCP tool or a no-code web application automation.

Traffic and buses

He gave two recent examples, “because it’s all still relatively new”. A customer in the utility space monitors traffic: real-time sensor feeds of vehicles, which produce a lot of data. It gives that data to agents through FME Flow’s MCP servers, so they can ask semantic questions of it. Another customer, in transit, has buses and other vehicles reporting their position every 10 seconds. It wants to transform that data and thin it before giving it to any agent, “and that’s where FME comes in”.

Growing with the protocol

Safe Software was an early adopter of MCP. After years of integrating with so many types of data, “now MCP is that gateway for agents to talk to all this data that we already integrate with.” The protocol is still being developed, with asynchronous capabilities and more on the way, and the company plans to grow with it.

The other theme of the conference, he noted, was security and control. On FME’s platform you can already see what a tool call has done; the next step is to improve that lineage and make it easier for users to see, graphically, what each tool call did. Safe Software’s user conference is in London in March next year.
